The Balkans have some excellent typical dishes that you will easily find in each country of the area. The trouble is that when we spend 2 weeks in the Balkans, we can not see a burek or a cevapi from near or far at the end of the trip! It is therefore recommended not to abuse it too :-) Fortunately, each Balkan country also has some typical dishes of their own. Here are the most common Balkan dishes:

1 . The Unmissable cevapi or cevapcici

It is grilled meat kebab that looks like a small piece of sausage. They are served in sets of 5 to 10 pieces on a plate or in a pita-type bread, often with sour cream and onions and sometimes with other vegetables. The cevapis are the essential snack in the Balkans and make a complete and really cheap meal! They are found essentially in snacks.

2 . the bureks

Another classic fast-food in the Balkans : the bureks, kind of puff pastry filled with meat, but which can also be filled with local cheese or vegetables. The bureks were imported in the Balkans as they are Turkish originally. There are some variations between regions. For example, the Bosniak burek is sometimes spiral and is covered with a delicious yogurt sauce.

3 . Grilled meat

4. cooking in terracotta pots

5 . The sirene cheese and shopska salad

This is a must and you will become addicted. Hopefully you’ll find the shopska salad almost everywhere! It is a Bulgarian salad with tomato and cucumber sprinkled with a delicious white cheese, usually sirene chesse.

6 . Pizzas , pastas and risottos

Given the proximity of the Balkans to Italy, you will also find many pizzerias. You can try the black risotto, but the aspect is not really appetizing…

7 . baklava

The proximity to Turkey and Greece makes baklava a specialty of the region as well.

8. And to drink? Of course rakja !

The unmissable drink when making a trip in the Balkans is rakja, which is plain or with different tastes. This is a strong liquor (typically 50-60 % alcohol).
