Best route in Croatia
Croatia was really one of our favorite places in Europe.
We visited a part of the country during a 12-day journey in Dalmatia in September 2010! Here was our itinerary: Budapest (Hongary) - Zagreb - Plitvice National Park – Novalja (Pag island) - Zadar - Split - -Brac island - Ljulbljana (Sloveny)
We have visited Dubrovnik in another 12-day journey in the Balkans in July 2013, starting from Thessaloniki and going up to Macedonia (Ohrid), Montenegro (Budva & Kotor), Croatia (Dubrovnik), Bosnia & Herzegovina (Mostar, Sarajevo) and Serbia (Beograd). It was for sure one of our greatest trip !
What you shouldn’t miss in Croatia ?
1. Plitvice Lakes
Any trail in Croatia must go through the Plitvice lakes, a park with lakes with turquoise water and stunning waterfalls (TOTALLY UNMISSABLE). If we had to recommend a place among the different places in Croatia, it would be this one … It is indescribably beautiful!
2. The Islands and some coastal cities
We also advise you to go through one of the many small islands along the coast (Brac, for example) and at least one of the coastal cities. We recommend Split, very nice with the ruins of the Diocletian Palace and a nice walk along the harbor, and secondly Dubrovnik and then Zadar. Dubrovnik is really beautiful but very touristy and harder to access from Croatia, it’s better to visit it during a trip from Montenegro or Bosnia.
3. For party: Pag island
For the party, and only if you go in July or August, go to the island of Pag (Novalja), known as the Croatian Ibiza.
Zagreb, the capital, has some interesting monuments, but it is not so much worth the trip. It took us three hours to go around.
