Jacksonville is the largest city in the United States, in northern Florida! Apart from that , the city is not really interesting compared to others cities, especially in Florida … It’s so big that it becomes even unpleasant to visit the city, because of the long distances between all points of interest. You’ll feel really small and not always safe. I stayed there for 4 months for my exchange program , so if you ever go there, here are some tips to make the best of the city.

HOW TO MOVE around in JACKSONVILLE ?

You should better have a car. Given its size, if you want to cross the city from one end to the other, it takes some time. It is therefore impossible to get around without any means of transport and is not so easy to travel by bus, because they are not very frequent.

WHAT TO SEE IN JACKSONVILLE ?

  • The city center, with its Museum of Science and History and the Landing, a shopping and entertainment center just across the water. With its nightclubs, shops, restaurants along the water, it is very popular with locals. In the museum of science and history, you find some interesting stuff on the human body, marrin animals and Florida history. The fountain next to the museum is very nice .
  • The Riverside district : historic homes, churches, unique crafts, beautiful parks and real restaurants (not fast food). Here you’ll find a bohemian atmosphere. A little bit of Europe in the U.S., it feels good. This really is the nicest part of town.
  • Jacksonville Beach is not really terrible .
  • Go shopping at St. Johns Town Center, a very nice street of shops and everything is outdoor, which makes it different to all the malls you’ll find in the US.  It is really nice to walk there ! You ‘ll find all the U.S. stores like American Eagle, Hollister, American Apparel or Abercrombie !

WHERE TO EAT A JACKSONVILLE ?

I recommend to everybody my favorite Japanese restaurant : the WASABI , near St. Johns Town Center, found only in the area (it’s a chain, but only 3 or 4 restaurants) ! The sushi was absolutely divine, but also you can see the chef preparing delicious Japanese dishes in front of you, and making it a real show not to be missed !
For the rest, there is the same fast food than elsewhere :-) See our page on the specialties and American chain restaurant !

Nightlife in JACKSONVILLE ?

To go out, everything happens at the beach ! There are numerous bars and nightclubs along the beach where you can spend a great Friday or Saturday night. My favorite was the Ocean Club. There is also a Bowling near the beach.
